The Unfinished Obelisk

The remarkable Unfinished Obelisk in Aswan, linked to Queen Hatshepsut (1508-1458 BC), was intended to soar into the sky and stand majestically at the main entrance of the grand Karnak Temple. Although it was carved during construction, it now remains as an impressive open-air museum showcasing the craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian builders.

Notable figures interred here include Rameses II, Amenhotep I, Seti I, Tutankhamun, and several others.

Hatshepsut Temple

The magnificent Temple of Hatshepsut is a masterpiece of sacred art and remarkable architecture, built in 1479 BC. It was commissioned for Queen Hatshepsut and designed by Senenmut, her chief overseer of royal projects, to honor the creator god Amun, for whom she served as the principal priestess.

These statues underwent multiple restorations during the Greco-Roman period. The inscriptions on the statues vividly recount the mythological story of the legendary warrior king Memnon, while the auditory phenomenon associated with Eos, the Greek goddess of dawn, adds a captivating and mystical element.

The Karnak temple complex stands as one of the most outstanding examples of ancient Egyptian architectural art. For over 2000 years, from 1971 BC to 20 BC, it served as the main center for the religious and political authority of Thebes. Situated in the heart of Thebes, the complex was dedicated to honoring the deities of the powerful 18th dynasty Theban triad: Amun, Mut, and Khonsu.
