8. Siwa City
Siwa is a majestic oasis located at the edge of the Great Sand Sea, part of the vast Sahara, close to the Libyan border. Siwa Oasis was the most inaccessible of all Egypt’s oases, and due to new road links, it has only recently opened up to tourism. Siwa Oasis is a hidden natural gem located between the great sand sea of the western desert and the Qattara Depression, about 50 km (30 mi) east of the Libyan border and 560 km (348 mi) from Cairo.
The history of the oasis can be traced back to the 26th dynasty, around 525 BC, which was called the Field of Tress by ancient Egyptians. The local people are known as Siwans, and to this day have their own culture and customs and speak the Berber language, called Siwi, rather than Arabic. Many women still wear traditional costumes and silver jewelry like those displayed in the traditional Siwan House Museum in the town center.
