It was commissioned by Mohammed Ali Pasha in 1830 AD and its construction continued until his passing in 1848 AD. The mosque's exterior design was inspired by the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul, making it one of the most important Islamic landmarks in Cairo.
