Wadi El Natroun is one of the most remarkable Christian sites globally, where thousands of Copts sought refuge in the 4th century to escape oppression and injustice under Roman rule. This historic location is renowned as the birthplace of Christian monasticism. Wadi El Natroun was also significant to the ancient pharaohs as the primary source of natron, a natural sodium carbonate used in mummification. The region once housed numerous monasteries, of which only four still exist today.
The Monastery of Baramus, known in Arabic as "Deir Al Baramus," is one of the Wadi El Natroun monasteries founded in 340 AD. It was established by St. Macarius on the site where he lived and devoted himself to the Christian faith.
Situated in Wadi El Natroun, this monastery is dedicated to Anba Bishoy, who is said to have had a vision of Jesus Christ. The complex includes five Coptic churches and features large towers that were historically used to defend the monasteries from Berber attacks.
It is one of the oldest monasteries in Wadi El Natroun, built in the 4th century by St. Makarius the Great. It was primarily founded as a commemorative site for St. Makarius, who is regarded as the father of the monks in Wadi El Natroun, being the first to settle in the valley.
Founded in the 6th century by St. Bishoy, it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is believed that Syrian monks resided in the monastery for a period, which is why it is named "Suryan," referring to the Syrians.
